Adoption Search

Catholic Charities, as an independent provider in cooperation with the Jackson County Family Court, conducts adoption searches for adoptees desiring information and/or contact with their birth biological families.

Two types of searches are available. Fees for these services cover the search coordinator's time, contacts with the court, travel, telephone charges, copies, postage and any other expenses incurred to conduct the search.

  • Non-Identifying Information Search

Non-identifying information from an adoptee's Catholic Charities' records can be released upon the adoptee's request at the age of 18. A notarized search agreement must be accompanied by a check or money order in the amount of $100. Notarization is required to ensure the information is released only to the adopted individual.

Non-identifying information is data contained in the record at the time of adoptee's birth. Adoptive parent consent is not required for non-identifying information requests.

  • Full-Identifying Search

Catholic Charities conducts Full-Identifying Searches for individuals adopted through Catholic Charities or another agency. An individual must be 18 years of age to authorize a full search.

Individuals must complete the Adoption Search Agreement and Parental Consent Form. Notarization of these forms is required. The forms must accompany a check or money order in the amount of $375.

If an individual's adoptive parents are deceased, a copy of the death certificate or proof of death must be provided. Upon receipt of these documents and the fee, Catholic Charities requests authorization from the court to do the search. When birthparents are located, Catholic Charities must obtain permission from birthparent and the court to release the records.

If an individual's birthparents are deceased, Missouri law does not permit Catholic Charities to release any information within the adoptive record.
