HUNDREDS OF CHRISTMAS WISH LISTS FULFILLED THROUGH PROJECT SHINING STAR

Waiting List Remains for Annual Catholic Charities Gift-Giving Campaign

KANSAS CITY, MO – When poverty is a daily struggle, Christmas presents are not an option for hundreds of
children, families and seniors served by Catholic Charities of Kansas City-St. Joseph. Thanks to Project Shining Star, however, many of them will receive gifts and necessities this holiday season.

Project Shining Star seeks donations from the community to fill hundreds of wish lists each year. This season, Catholic Charities collected more than 625 wish lists from children. Businesses, community groups and individuals responded generously by adopting nearly 573 children so far, but dozens remain on our waiting list.

“If not for Project Shining Star, I know many children and families who would wake up with nothing on Christmas morning,” said Nicole McCrory, Services for Young Families Program Manager.

Many times, wish lists include only necessities; underwear, socks and warm winter clothing are requested as often as games, toys or movie tickets. For mothers with young children, diapers are one of the most requested items.

“The people who have the least are the people who are most appreciative,” McCrory said. “But in many ways, they also have the most – the most heart, the most joy at receiving gifts.”

In addition to fulfilling the wishes on our waiting list, Project Shining Star is also seeking donations for nearly 500 seniors. The most requested and appreciated item is a $10 pharmacy card.

Giving drives, shopping trips and donation drop-offs are underway now through December 7. Monetary donations and gift cards are welcome. For more information, please visit www.catholiccharities-kcsj.org.
