Happy Easter!
Paul’s second letter to the Corinthians 5:14, states in part, “the love of Christ impels us.” Not coincidentally, this is also Bishop James Johnston’s Episcopal Motto (in Latin), “Caritas Christi Urget Nos.”
Pope Benedict in his Apostolic Letter, Porta Fidei, stated that “it is the love of Christ that fills our hearts and impels us to evangelize.” We at Catholic Charities of Kansas City-St. Joseph are here to serve, change hearts and evangelize because the love of Christ impels us.
As I reflect during the Lenten season on the great things we accomplish at Catholic Charities, people don’t always understand who we are or what we do. We are not just another charitable organization. We are the charitable arm of the Diocese who serves the poor and vulnerable in our 27-county area. We don’t just serve their earthly needs, but also strive to serve their spiritual needs.
People are born with a huge “hole” in their heart and are not sure how to fill this “hole” or longing that God designed to be filled with him. When they arrive at our doorstep broken and lonely, we are here to lift them up by first attending to their temporal needs and then to share the gospel of Jesus Christ and give them hope for their future.
