Urgency exists everywhere
What if your utilities were about to be shut off because you couldn’t pay your bill?
What if you were on the brink of eviction and didn’t know where to go?
What if your only means of transportation was an unreliable car needing costly repairs, and you struggled to get to work every day?
Individuals and families facing crises like these first encounter Catholic Charities through the Welcome Center – our program that provides emergency assistance to those with an urgent need. Staff and volunteers meet dozens of veterans, single moms, ex-offenders, seniors and homeless persons every day, and are able to help them stabilize – and begin working toward self-sufficiency.
But that service happens primarily out of the Kansas City and St. Joseph offices.
We are called to serve beyond our urban locations. Similar needs exist in all 27 counties – in areas that are not as densely populated as our two large cities. We need to “extend the welcome.”
The Welcome Center is piloting expanded access to the same services available in our permanent offices through partnerships with parishes and other social service organizations. Our Veteran’s team and Welcome Center specialists have already been out in locations like North Kansas City and Belton, offering emergency assistance, conducting assessments and intakes and guiding families to the services that could help them reach self-sufficiency. It confirms that need knows no boundaries, and strengthens our resolve to be of assistance across our entire 27 county area.
