Hundreds of Students Helped by Catholic Charities School Drive

“The families were able to spend money on other necessities and the students were able to feel happy about returning to school with a self-esteem boost,” said Catherine Hooper.

Agency’s Junior Board Tops Last Year’s Distribution

KANSAS CITY, MO, September 16, 2013 — Fresh school supplies may be one of the best parts of a new school year, but many families simply cannot afford these necessary items. The Junior Board of Catholic Charities of Kansas City-St. Joseph helped fill that need this year with a school supply distribution that exceeded its original goal.

“We expected to give out about 450 school kits,” said Junior Board President Amy Nigro Conneally. “But we ended up packing and distributing about 475. We increased our total by about 195 percent over the first year of the program.”

The Junior Board purchased items such as paper, pencils, and notebooks with funds raised by Soiree, the signature Junior Board event held at Union Station’s Science City.

Volunteers packed the school supply bags at the Catholic Charities Caritas Center, 20 West 9th Street, Kansas City, MO, and then distributed bags to hundreds of eager students at Holy Cross and St. Anthony’s Parishes on Sunday, August 11, 2013. They also distributed 10 bags to homeless students who frequent the Morning Glory Café near the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.

Catherine Hooper, Catholic Charities liaison to the Junior Board said both students and their families benefit from the distribution.

“The families were able to spend money on other necessities and the students were able to feel happy about returning to school with a self-esteem boost,” said Hooper.
