St. Michael’s Veterans Campus Offers Home to New Wave of Veterans

The St. Michael’s Veterans Campus will serve veterans of all U.S. conflicts. The Department of Veterans Affairs predicts the percentage of surviving Gulf War era veterans will surpass that of all other wars by 2015. St. Michael’s Veterans campus is prepared for the shift in the population.

Ceremonial Groundbreaking is Wednesday, September 25

KANSAS CITY, MO, September 24, 2013 — Since the U.S. went to war in Afghanistan in 2001 and Iraq in 2003, about 2.5 million members of the military and related Reserve and National Guard units have deployed in those conflicts. As they return home in rising numbers, they face many of the same difficulties as veterans before them: lack of housing, access to benefits and supportive services. Catholic Charities of Kansas City-St. Joseph and The Yarco Companies are building the St. Michael’s Veterans Campus to address those needs.

The ceremonial groundbreaking for this innovative model of permanent housing and supportive services is set for Wednesday, September 25, 2013, at 8:30 a.m. The campus is located just west of the intersection of Emanuel Cleaver II Boulevard and Leeds Road.

“We anticipate a mix of soldiers from different eras,” said Executive Director Carrie Rosetti. “The great thing about this project is that it can serve any at risk veteran. Many do not meet certain eligibility criteria for housing vouchers so they live on the street, in a shelter or in a place not meant for human habitation. This project will give them a home and access to services they need to transition to civilian life.”

Phase one of St. Michael’s Veterans campus includes 58 one-bedroom apartment units and space for supportive services. It is slated for completion in spring 2014. Ultimately, St. Michael’s will include 180 units of permanent, affordable housing.
